Poulsbo

WA · 47.7392, -122.6392

From Poulsbo, Washington, Byway's registries place 26 scenic byways, 1 national park, 1 public land unit and 10 campgrounds within 30 miles.

Poulsbo was settled in 1892 by Norwegian loggers, farmers and fishermen who likened the fjord-cut landscape to their homeland. Iver Brynildsen Moe, the first postmaster, suggested the town be named "Paulsbo", but federal authorities misspelled the town's name, likely misreading Moe's handwriting, and the community became known as "Poulsbo" thereafter. Norwegian was the primary language of most residents until the population boom around the area's naval bases during World War II.
