Melkevarden

Melkevarden sits at 397 ft on the Varanger byway, facing 270° with the land dropping 230 ft within 600 m of the overlook. The view west-southwest takes in Vadsøya naturpark at 1.4 mi and, at 1.6 mi, the Cemetery of old combustion engines, visible only at low tide. Skogsholmjordet lies to the west-northwest at 1.7 mi and 157 ft, while Bugøynes plantelivsfredning and the Vestersand coast both appear to the south-southwest at 8.3 mi. Farther out, two peaks are visible: Gáranascohkka to the southwest at 12.5 mi (1,587 ft) and Ravntinden to the west-southwest at 13.8 mi (1,511 ft). The facing points directly toward sunset. At the March equinox, sunrise is 05:02 and sunset 17:16; at the September equinox, sunrise is 05:40 and sunset 18:09. The June solstice brings midnight sun, and the December solstice brings polar night, meaning the site can be visited at any hour in summer but only during a fixed sunless period in winter.
