Mount Ngauruhoe

This overlook sits along the Volcanic Loop Highway at an elevation of 2,946 ft. The land drops 66 ft within the first 600 meters from the viewpoint. Pangarara Stream is visible to the west-southwest, 0.5 mi away at 2,967 ft, and the peak Urchin can be seen to the east-northeast, 4.8 mi distant at 4,567 ft. Daylight hours shift across the year: sunrise comes at 05:48 and sunset at 20:43 near the December solstice, while the June solstice sees a later sunrise of 07:37 and an earlier sunset of 17:02. The equinox dates fall in between, with sunrise at 07:20 and sunset at 19:31 in March, and sunrise at 06:08 and sunset at 18:13 in September. This lookout follows Te Pōrere Upper Redoubt Viewing Tower along the route and precedes Motuoapa Cliff Lookout for those continuing the drive.
