Red woods

Red Woods sits at 1,277 feet along the Thermal Explorer Highway, facing 30° with the land dropping 311 feet within 600 meters of the overlook. The view opens across a series of lakes and points to the north and northeast. Lake Rotoatamaheke and Lake Te Kirikiri lie 0.4 miles northeast, with Puarenga Stream visible 0.7 miles to the north-northeast. Sulphur Lake sits 2.1 miles north, near Rocky Point at the same distance. Further out, Sulphur Point, Motutara Point, and Ōwhatiura Point extend along the north-northeast horizon between 2.2 and 3.0 miles, followed by Hinemoa Point at 3.9 miles and Kawaha Point at 4.3 miles to the north. Ngunguru Point marks the farthest visible feature, 5.2 miles to the northeast. Sunrise and sunset times shift across the year, from a 05:49 sunrise at the December solstice to a 07:32 sunrise at the June solstice. This stop follows the Geyser viewpoint and precedes the Upper Whaka Outlook along the byway.
