About Toms Lake Cabin Toms Lake Cabin sits on a knoll overlooking a semi-open area surrounded by tall pines and Toms Lake. The setting is ideal for a rustic Upper Peninsula Michigan getaway. Many visitors return year after year and this location has been lovingly described in online reviews as the best place on earth. The structure was built in 1991 with generous donations from Rapid River Rustic Homes, which contributed the basic cabin package, and RE-EDCO Incorporated, which did much of the finish work. Furniture construction was done by the USDA - Forest Service. About Toms Lake Toms Lake is one-quarter mile north of County Road (CR) 440, off Forest Road 2082. The area has an abundance of lakes and varying elevations. • The 23-acre lake is approximately 29 miles northwest of Manistique in Schoolcraft County. • There is a good swimming area at Toms Lake; however, the site has not been checked for hazards so caution should be exercised. Please remember that you swim at your own risk. • In 1996, fisheries biologists surveyed the lake and found a decent largemouth bass and bluegill fishery. • Boat access at Toms Lake is limited to carry-in only. Recreation Near Toms Lake Cabin Rent Toms Lake Cabin during any season of the year and enjoy the wide variety of recreational experiences that the Upper Peninsula Michigan and Hiawatha National Forest have to offer! • The cabin is one-quarter mile west of the Ironjaw semi-primitive area and the Pine Marten Run trail system , which offers 26 miles of trail suitable for horseback riders, mountain bikers and hikers. • Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are popular on the Pine Marten Run Trail, but the trail is not groomed. • ​It is also near the Big Island Lake Wilderness with its 23 small lakes and portages to challenge the canoeist. • The nationally designated Wild and Scenic Indian River is also nearby, and its 51 miles offer outstanding canoeing and fishing opportunities. • For the winter enthusiast, there is ice fishing on Toms Lake and snowmobile trails can be found nearby. • Be aware, this facility is not cleaned between user visits. There are private cabins on the other side of the lake, and you may see or hear motorized boats and jet skis that access Toms Lake from their properties.
