Spruce Mountain Fire Lookout
Live a bit of history and enjoy incredible views of southeastern Wyoming including Medicine Bow Peak, Rob Roy Reservoir, Jelm Mountain, and the southern end of the Snowy Range. Formerly used to detect fires, the tower rises 55 feet above a forested mountaintop in the Medicine Bow mountain range. The tower was renovated and opened to the public for overnight rental in 1997. The rental fee is $40 per night and is open Mid-June through October 1st, weather permitting. Maximum rental is two consecutive nights with no more than ten nights in a calendar year and no more than three weekends in a calendar year. Additional camping is allowed below the tower, with a total of ten occupants at the site. Amenities include: propane refrigerator, stove with oven, heater, lamps, two single beds, four chairs and table, hoist (pulley and rope), historic fire finder, and more. No water is available at the tower. A pit toilet is located nearby. Elevation at the tower is 10,003 feet. Visitors should prepare for high altitude conditions. During the summer average daytime temperature is 70 degrees with a low of 30 degrees at night or during thunderstorms. During lightning storms, stay in cabin and do not touch metal furnishings. The tower is located seven miles west of Albany, Wyoming on FS road 500, a well-graveled road accessible by two-wheel drive vehicles. This area is managed by the Laramie Ranger District. This site should be accessed only with a reservation. Please be mindful of other visitors and do not climb the tower unless you are the with the reservation-holding party.
