Dooneen Mine quartz vein This narrow promontory is a quartz vein stained with copper mineralisation that juts out into the sea near Allihies. Collapsed shaft at Dooneen Mine Copper mining started at Allihies in 1812. This was one of six mines in the area. Two shafts were sunk here in 1823 and mining continued until 1838 when the ore petered out. A revival in the 1860s was short lived. — John M · CC BY-SA 2.0 · source
