Fantestein

OpenStreetMap
Looking east from Fantestein. Terrain and imagery at true elevation.

Fantestein sits at 4,679 feet along the Sognefjellet byway, facing due east toward the sunrise. The land drops 110 feet within 600 meters of the overlook. To the east and southeast, a line of peaks in the Smørstabbtindene group fills the view, including Store Smørstabbtinden at 7,160 feet, Sokse at 7,009 feet, and Kniven, Sauen, and Skeie, all above 6,700 feet. Kalven, at 6,552 feet, lies 3.3 miles to the east-southeast; it is part of Jotunheimen National Park and its peak is surrounded by a glacier. Additional summits—Veslbreatinden, Hurrbreatinden, and Storbreatinden—extend the view to the east-northeast, while Storoksle and Sørvestre Smørstabbtinden appear to the southeast. Because the overlook faces the sunrise directly, morning light reaches it early, with sunrise as early as 03:44 at the June solstice and as late as 09:47 at the December solstice. The stop lies between Sengaberget and Leirdalen on the Sognefjellet route.
