Rua Ōwhanga sits at 1,105 ft along the Thermal Explorer Highway, with the land dropping 45 ft within 600 m of the overlook. Two peaks are visible from this point: Maungaongaonga to the north-northwest at 2.5 mi, rising to 2,674 ft, and Maunga Kākaramea, also known as Rainbow Mountain, to the north-northeast at 2.9 mi, at 2,438 ft. Maungaongaonga is a dacite volcano located between Rotorua and Taupō on the North Island Volcanic Plateau; its area is a scenic reserve, and some of its southern slopes are highly geothermally active. Daylight hours at the overlook vary by season, with sunrise at 05:48 and sunset at 20:38 around the December solstice, and sunrise at 07:32 with sunset at 17:02 around the June solstice. The equinox days bring sunrise and sunset times closer to 06:06–07:17 and 18:11–19:29, respectively. Roto Kārikitea lies before this stop along the route, and Primrose Terrace follows as the next lookout.
