Takitimu Mountains

This overlook sits at 949 ft along the Southland & the Catlins byway, with the land dropping 30 ft within 600 m of the viewpoint. Several named peaks are visible from the site: Fern Hill lies 3.5 mi to the west at 1,152 ft, Wood Hill rises to 2,303 ft 4.0 mi to the south-southeast, and Woodhen Hill reaches 3,179 ft 5.3 mi to the southeast. Spear Peak stands 6.0 mi east-southeast at 2,067 ft, Brown Peak 6.4 mi south-southeast at 4,823 ft, Danby Hill 6.9 mi north-northeast at 2,375 ft, and Excelsior Peak 7.1 mi south-southwest at 5,062 ft. Daylight hours shift across the year: sunrise at 07:51 and sunset at 20:03 near the March equinox, sunrise at 08:30 and sunset at 17:12 near the June solstice, sunrise at 06:40 and sunset at 18:45 near the September equinox, and sunrise at 05:56 and sunset at 21:38 near the December solstice. The Key Scenic View precedes this stop on the byway, and Boulder Reach Lookout follows it.
