The historic museum is located one mile from the northwest entrance of the park near Manzanita Lake. From the museum you can pick up the trail around Manzanita Lake or cross the highway to access the self-guided, interpretive Lily Pond Nature Trail. Lassen Association store is across the plaza from the Museum.

From Redding, California follow Highway 44 east 50 miles. Turn south on Highway 89 and continue one mile to the park's northwest entrance. From Reno, Nevada follow Highway 395 north to Highway 44. Follow Highway 44 miles west 180 miles. Turn south on Highway 89 and continue one mile to the park's northwest entrance.

This single-story building is built of native volcanic rock and surrounded by a three-foot-high rock wall. A set of steps leads to the front entrance, which opens into a large exhibit hall. An information desk and is located in the corner at the left. A set of glass exhibit cases sit in the center of the room creating a circular walkway through exhibits on both sides. A doorway at the back of the hall leads down a short hallway to an auditorium where the park film is shown. The hallway ends at a wheelchair accessible entrance that exits to a ramp that wraps around the building and back to the front entrance. The museum sits on the west edge of a plaza, which includes a small restroom building and a second single story building that serves as a park store.
