The area that is now Dudley, as with most of Central Massachusetts, is the homeland of the Nipmuc people. A small band of the Nipmuc, Webster/Dudley Band of Chaubunagungamaug Nipmuck Indians, is based out of Dudley and the bordering towns of Webster and Thompson, Connecticut. Europeans colonized the area that is now Webster in 1713. In 1801, the west part of Dudley was broken off to form what would become Southbridge, which was officially incorporated in 1816.
