Artist's Rock

Artist's Rock sits at 1,373 feet along the Shawangunk Mountains Scenic Byway, facing 300 degrees with the land dropping 618 feet within 600 meters of the overlook. The view opens toward the west and west-southwest, taking in Rock Hill at 1.5 miles, an unnamed 855-foot peak at 2.7 miles, and Whale's Head at 2.9 miles. Dickie Barre and Peterskill East Cliff are also visible, at 2.9 and 3.1 miles respectively, with elevations of 1,357 and 1,226 feet. Because the overlook faces roughly toward sunset, with the direction 30 degrees off square to due west, evening light crosses the scene; sunset times range from 16:30 at the December solstice to 20:36 at the June solstice. Yorktown and Cortlandt lie about 37 to 38 miles to the south-southeast, and Danbury is 44.5 miles southeast. Copes Lookout precedes this stop on the byway, and Thurston Rock follows it.
