Chawalauna Overlook

Chawalauna Overlook sits at 7,471 feet on the Wild Rivers Back Country Scenic Byway, facing 210 degrees toward the south-southwest. The terrain drops 708 feet within 600 meters of the overlook. La Junta Point lies 1.8 miles to the south at 7,396 feet, and Cerro Montoso rises to the west at 4.7 miles, reaching 8,647 feet. Farther south, at 14.5 miles, the Rio Grande Gorge Historical Marker sits at 6,968 feet, with the Gorge Overlook Rest Stop nearby to the south-southwest at 14.6 miles and 6,991 feet. Questa is the closest town, 5.2 miles east-northeast, while Taos lies 20.0 miles south-southeast and Angel Fire is 29.8 miles southeast. Daylight hours vary by season: around the June solstice, sunrise is at 05:45 and sunset at 20:25, while around the December solstice sunrise comes later at 07:12 and sunset earlier at 16:51. At the equinoxes, daylight runs from roughly 06:51–07:07 to 19:01–19:15. The next lookout along the byway is Sheep Crossing.
