Big blue dust covers on top of huge generators. One unit can nearly power a city of 500,000 people. Many remain idle till times of peak power demand, such as early winter mornings when folks push up the heat. If these generators were to be running 24 / 7, there would not be enough water in the river

Water is taken from Lake Roosevelt on Columbia River and pumped up hill, a little ways, then allowed to flow into Banks Lake for storage of irrigation water. Several pumps do the job with motors rated at 55,000 horse power.
