This overlook sits at 538 feet on the Journey Through Hallowed Ground Byway, with the land dropping 60 feet within 600 meters of the site. Big Round Top rises to the south-southeast at a distance of 0.4 miles, reaching 749 feet in elevation. Big Round Top is documented as the topographic high point of the Gettysburg Battlefield, the site of 1863 Civil War engagements for which Medals of Honor were awarded, and the location of battle monuments along with the Big Round Top Observation Tower Foundation Ruin, a structure dating to the historic reconstruction era. The hill itself is boulder-strewn and uninhabited.
