East Rim Overlook

East Rim Overlook sits at mile 30 of 55 along the Steens Loop, at an elevation of 9,716 feet, with terrain dropping 1,420 feet within 600 meters of the rim. The view faces 105 degrees, oriented 15 degrees off due east, toward sunrise. Devine Rock is visible to the southeast at 1.8 miles. Farther out, the Mickey Hot Springs Area of Critical Environmental Concern, Mickey Hot Springs itself, and the Mickey Basin Area of Critical Environmental Concern lie to the east between 11.0 and 11.6 miles, with Mickey Butte to the east-northeast at 11.4 miles. Additional peaks in view include Coffin Butte to the northeast at 17.5 miles, Table Mountain to the east-northeast at 19.9 miles, Howluk Butte to the south-southeast at 20.8 miles, Twin Buttes to the east-southeast at 24.7 miles, Red Lookout Butte to the south-southeast at 25.5 miles, and Red Mountain to the south-southeast at 29.1 miles. Because the overlook faces near sunrise, morning light crosses the rim directly; sunrise times range from 05:17 at the June solstice to 07:22 at the December solstice.
