Fishers Gap Overlook

Fishers Gap Overlook sits at 3,069 feet on Skyline Drive, facing 330 degrees, with land dropping 831 feet within 600 meters of the viewpoint. Looking northwest, the overlook provides a narrow window onto the Shenandoah Valley, with Massanutten Mountain visible beyond it; a small notch in that mountain is New Market Gap, site of a Civil War battle fought on May 15, 1864 between Union and Confederate forces, a Confederate victory that proved their last in the valley. From the overlook, Spitler Knoll Overlook is visible to the north-northeast at 1.0 mile, followed by the peak Nakedtop at 1.8 miles in the same direction. Tanbark Flat lies to the north at 2.0 miles, while Hershberger Hill and Varner Hill are visible to the north-northwest and north at 4.4 and 5.3 miles respectively. Harrisonburg is 24.8 miles to the west-southwest, Charlottesville 35.0 miles south, and Staunton 44.1 miles southwest. On Skyline Drive, this overlook falls between Franklin Cliffs Overlook and Blackrock Overlook.
