Flag Rock Overlook

Flag Rock Overlook sits at 3,196 feet along the Coal Heritage Trail - VA, facing 330 degrees toward the north-northwest. The terrain drops 684 feet within 600 meters of the overlook, giving an open view across the valley below. Legion Park lies west-northwest at 0.5 miles, with Veterans Park to the north at 1.0 mile and Norton City Park north-northwest at the same distance, all situated at lower elevations than the overlook itself. Farther out, Buck Knob rises to the north at 9.3 miles, Bold Camp Mountain sits north-northeast at 11.0 miles, and Halls Butt, a summit in Letcher County, Kentucky, appears to the northwest at 12.9 miles. Two additional viewpoints, Stateline Knob and Wildcat Rock, are visible to the north-northwest at roughly 14.5 and 14.6 miles. Kingsport lies 25.8 miles to the south and Bristol is 33.1 miles to the southeast. Sunrise and sunset times vary by season, with the June solstice offering the longest daylight window, from 06:12 to 20:54, and the December solstice the shortest, from 07:41 to 17:18. The Tunnel Floor Observation Deck precedes this stop on the byway, with Towers Overlook next along the route.
