Kanawha Falls sits on the Kanawha River in West Virginia, formed by a diagonal sandstone ledge that crosses the river about 1 mile downstream from the confluence of the New and Gauley rivers. The falls drop 24 ft and have served as a barrier to fish movement for more than 1 million years. The overlook lies along the Midland Trail at an elevation of 628 ft. Beckley is 25.5 miles to the south, Charleston is 26.8 miles to the west-northwest, and South Charleston is 30.5 miles west-northwest. Kanawha Falls is a waterfall on the Kanawha River in the U.S. state of West Virginia that has been a barrier to fish movement for more than 1 million years. The waterfall is formed by a diagonal sandstone ledge across the river about 1 mile (1.6 km) downstream from the confluence of the New and Gauley rivers. It is 24 ft (7.3 m) high.
