Kickapoo Canyon

Kickapoo Canyon sits at 560 feet along the Illinois River Road, facing due north. The terrain drops 110 feet within 600 meters of the overlook, giving the landscape below some relief. Carey Memorial Park lies north-northwest at 1.7 miles, sitting lower at 480 feet, while the Pecumsaugan Creek - Blackball Mines Nature Preserve is visible to the northwest at 2.7 miles, at a slightly higher elevation of 580 feet. The nearest towns are well removed from the site: Oswego is 41.9 miles to the northeast, with Aurora and Batavia farther along the same direction at 46.6 and 51.0 miles. Sac Canyon is the previous lookout on this route. Daylight hours here shift substantially across the year, with sunrise as early as 5:24 a.m. near the June solstice and as late as 7:19 a.m. near the December solstice, and sunset ranging from 4:30 p.m. in December to 8:33 p.m. in June.
