Lake Ngakoro Vista sits at 1,037 feet along the Thermal Explorer Highway, with the terrain dropping 12 feet over the first 600 meters from the overlook. Two peaks are visible: Maungaongaonga, a dacite volcano, to the north-northwest at 2.9 miles and 2,674 feet, and Maunga Kākaramea, also known as Rainbow Mountain, to the north-northeast at 3.2 miles and 2,438 feet. Maungaongaonga's area is a scenic reserve, and some of its southern slopes are highly geothermally active. Daylight hours at this overlook vary through the year, from sunrise at 05:48 and sunset at 20:38 around the December solstice to sunrise at 07:32 and sunset at 17:02 around the June solstice. The equinox days fall in between, with sunrise near 06:06–07:17 and sunset near 18:11–19:29. This stop is positioned between Frying Pan Flat, the previous lookout, and Waipunga Falls Viewpoint, the next one along the route.
