Lookout Viewpoint

Lookout Viewpoint sits at 6,498 feet along the Southland & the Catlins byway, facing west at 270 degrees, with land dropping 2,013 feet within 600 meters of the overlook. The view spans a mix of peaks and water below. To the west-northwest, Peninsula Hill rises at 2,736 feet 4.0 miles out, with Queenstown Hill (2,976 ft, 6.3 mi), Sugar Loaf (2,989 ft, 6.4 mi), and Rolands Rock (2,661 ft, 6.5 mi) further along the same direction. Flagstaff, at 3,399 feet, sits west-southwest at 6.9 miles, and Island Spur, a ridge reaching 4,380 feet, is visible west-southwest at 7.6 miles. Water features include Oxidation Pond to the north-northwest (1,044 ft, 4.1 mi), Lake Johnson to the northwest (1,309 ft, 5.0 mi), and Downeys Dam, also northwest, at 1,437 feet and 8.0 miles. Jacks Point and Refuge Point, both capes, lie to the west-southwest and west respectively, at lower elevations near 1,000 to 1,200 feet. Ferry Hill, a peak at 2,277 feet, is north-northwest at 5.2 miles. Because the overlook faces directly toward sunset, sunset times vary by season, from 17:10 at the June solstice to 21:32 at the December solstice.
