Mt Parihaka Lookout

Mt Parihaka Lookout sits at 774 feet along the Twin Coast Discovery Highway, with the land dropping 711 feet within 600 meters of the overlook. The view faces 270°, directly toward the sunset point on the horizon. Lake Ora lies to the west-northwest at 3.2 miles, with Rawhitiroa volcano beyond it at 4.4 miles. Hurupaki and Parakiore peaks rise to the northwest at 3.7 and 4.8 miles, reaching 1,130 and 1,283 feet respectively. To the west-southwest, three volcanoes are visible in sequence: Maunu at 6.2 miles and 1,296 feet, Maungatapere at 9.4 miles and 1,178 feet, and Whatitiri at 11.0 miles and 1,152 feet. Because the lookout faces due west, sunset light falls squarely across this line of peaks and volcanoes. Sunset times vary through the year, from 17:17 at the June solstice to 20:39 at the December solstice. Couldrey House Lookout precedes this stop on the route, with Scenic Reserve following it.
