Phantom Ship Overlook

Phantom Ship Overlook sits at 6,757 feet on the Volcanic Legacy byway, at mile 109 of 138, facing due north, with terrain dropping 583 feet within 600 meters of the site. The view looks out on Phantom Ship, a dark, jagged island offshore in Crater Lake, 170 feet high, 500 feet long, and 200 feet wide. It is a resistant remnant of an ancient volcanic cone that was engulfed by the growing Mount Mazama, sharing the same underground magma chamber during that mountain's early building phase. The rocky spires survived Mazama's eruption and collapse and contain rock over 400,000 years old, among the oldest in the Crater Lake basin. Nearby named features include Victor View to the northeast at 0.9 miles and 7,445 feet, Wineglass to the north-northeast at 3.2 miles, Palisades and Roundtop to the north near 3.5 and 3.6 miles, and Rugged Crest Palisades to the north at 3.7 miles. The overlook lies between Kerr Notch and Victor View along the route. Chiloquin is 25.5 miles southeast, Butte Falls 35.9 miles southwest, and Eagle Point 48.1 miles southwest. Sunrise and sunset times vary by season, from a 05:30 sunrise in June to a 07:37 sunrise in December.
