Point Lookout

Point Lookout sits at 2,210 feet along the Historic National Road in Pennsylvania, facing west at 270 degrees. The land drops 596 feet within 600 meters of the overlook, a steep descent visible from the pull-off. Pine Knob rises to the west at 1.3 miles, standing at 2,133 feet. Farther out, the terrain lowers considerably: Meadowbrook Park lies west-northwest at 3.0 miles and 1,052 feet, with Bailey Park, Storey Square, Eberly Square, and George C Marshall Memorial Plaza all clustered to the northwest between 4.4 and 4.8 miles, each near or under 1,000 feet in elevation.

Because the overlook faces directly toward the sunset, evening light lines up with the view without offset. Sunset times shift across the year, from 19:31 at the March equinox to 20:51 at the June solstice, back to 19:18 at the September equinox, and 16:58 at the December solstice. Morgantown is the nearest town, 22.0 miles to the southwest, while Bethel Park and Mt. Lebanon lie farther north-northwest at 38.3 and 41.5 miles respectively. The combination of the sharp drop-off and the low-lying features to the northwest makes this a spot where the terrain change is the primary thing to observe.
