Mount Shavano, located in San Isabel National Forest, is named for Ute Chief Shavano. Closer in, the Chalk Cliffs are visible to the northwest at 10.8 miles, and Tigger Peak and Lost Mountain round out the more distant western skyline. Because the overlook faces directly toward the sunset, it offers a clear line toward the evening sky, with sunset times ranging from 16:47 in December to 20:33 in June. Salida lies 7.2 miles south-southeast, Poncha Springs 8.8 miles south-southwest, and Buena Vista 15.3 miles north-northwest, making the overlook a convenient stop between these towns along the byway.

Mount Shavano is a high mountain summit in the southern Sawatch Range of the Rocky Mountains of North America. The 14,228.3-foot (4,337 m) fourteener is located in San Isabel National Forest, 6.5 miles (10.5 km) north by west of the community of Maysville in Chaffee County, Colorado, United States. The mountain was named in honor of Ute Chief Shavano.
