San Jon Hill View

San Jon Hill View sits at 4,814 feet along the Mesalands Scenic Byway, facing due east. The land drops 237 feet within 600 meters of the overlook, giving an open view across the terrain below. Three peaks are visible to the east: Park Hill at 9.1 miles, followed by Purcell at 17.0 miles and Round Mountain at 17.1 miles, both around 4,470-4,475 feet in elevation. Because the overlook faces directly toward sunrise, it aligns with the rising sun through all seasons, with sunrise times ranging from 05:41 at the June solstice to 06:58 at the equinoxes and December solstice. Tucumcari lies 24.6 miles to the west-northwest, while Bovina and Friona are both roughly 42-43 miles to the southeast. The next lookout along the byway is Caprock View.
