Tern Lake

Tern Lake sits at 640 ft along the Seward Highway, with the view facing 121°, roughly toward sunrise. The land is nearly level here, dropping only 4 ft over 600 m. This is a day use site with 13 picnic sites and no fees, equipped with fire grates, tables, toilets, an information board, and a fish viewing platform overlooking the water.

Seward is 30.1 mi to the south, Girdwood is 32.8 mi north-northeast, and Whittier is 33.6 mi east-northeast. The previous lookout along the route is Lower Summit Lake Viewpoint. Given the facing direction, morning light comes in close to sunrise across the year: around 08:00 at the March equinox, 04:28 at the June solstice, 07:43 at the September equinox, and 10:06 at the December solstice. Sunset times range from as late as 23:33 in June to as early as 15:48 in December. The combination of picnic infrastructure and a fish viewing platform makes this a stop suited to a break with access to water views rather than an extended overlook higher above the surrounding terrain.
