Trestle Vista Observation Site

U.S. Forest Service
Looking south-west from Trestle Vista Observation Site. Terrain at true elevation.

Trestle Vista Observation Site sits at 8,422 feet along the Sunspot Scenic Byway, facing 240 degrees. The terrain drops 290 feet within 600 meters of the overlook, giving the ground below a steep pitch. The facing direction is offset about 30 degrees from square with the sunset, so evening light approaches at an angle rather than straight on. Alamogordo lies 13.0 miles to the west-southwest, Tularosa 17.4 miles west-northwest, and Ruidoso 25.7 miles north.

From 1899 to 1947, steam engines ran the railroad line from Alamogordo to Cloudcroft and beyond, climbing through this area. The nearby Mexican Canyon Trestle observation site marks one of the last large trestles still standing along that route. This overlook is listed along the byway with Mexican Canyon Trestle Vista on US 82 as the next stop.

On the far side of Mexican Canyon Trestle, on a railroad grade now trail, is a lookout/embankment that lets you get up close and personal with the trestle. Personally, while Mexican Canyon Trestle looks great, I don't think the lookout provides a good view. Even with the mile of walking up and down
