Zigzag Canyon Rim

OpenStreetMap
Looking west from Zigzag Canyon Rim. Terrain and imagery at true elevation.

Zigzag Canyon Rim sits at 5,443 feet along the Mount Hood byway, at mile 57 of 100. The overlook faces due west (270°), and the land drops 726 feet within 600 meters of the rim, giving a view down into the canyon below. Yocum Falls is visible to the southwest at 3.5 miles. Several peaks line the western horizon: East Zigzag Mountain at 3.7 miles, Tom Dick and Harry Mountain at 4.4 miles, Zigzag Mountain at 4.7 miles, and West Zigzag Mountain farther out at 7.0 miles, along with Laurel Hill to the west-southwest at 3.9 miles. Because the view faces directly toward the sunset, evening light lines up with the canyon axis; sunset falls at 19:20 near the March equinox, 20:59 at the June solstice, 19:06 near the September equinox, and 16:27 at the December solstice. The nearest towns are well to the west-northwest and west: Gresham at 35.2 miles, Camas at 36.2 miles, and Happy Valley at 37.2 miles, all distant enough that the overlook itself remains the point of interest rather than any nearby settlement.

Took advantage of, what I thought would be, the last big snow storm of the season and spent a night at Timberline Lodge. The lodge sits at around 6000ft. We are overlooking the Cascades to the southwest.
