Jenny Lake Visitor Center

Harrison Crandall built this cabin in 1921 near the Cathedral Group Turnout as his studio. Today, the visitor center highlights the relationship between art, inspiration, and action in Grand Teton. Rangers are available at the front desk, in the plaza, and on trails for trip planning, park information, and education. Attend one of the many ranger programs offered here or shop at the Grand Teton Association bookstore. The nearby Jenny Lake Ranger Station offers backcountry and boat permits.

Heading north from Jackson on US 26/89/191, turn left (west) at Moose Junction and continue eight miles north to Jenny Lake Junction. Turn left (west) into the developed area. Heading south from Yellowstone on US 89/191/287, turn right (southwest) at Jackson Lake Junction and continue 12 miles south to Jenny Lake Junction. Turn right (west) into the developed area.

Directly south of the Jenny Lake Store, across the main asphalt walkway, is another one-story log cabin structure, the historic Jenny Lake Crandall Studio. Facing the front of the building, to the right of the walkway, a three-foot tall metal sign stands to the right of a wooden park bench. Text on the small, blue inclined panel reads: Historic Jenny Lake – Crandall Studio Homesteader and artist Harrison Crandall designed and built his photography studio between 1925 and 1926 on the sagebrush flats east of String Lake. Crandall sold photographs, postcards, and souvenirs to tourists from the studio. In 1931, he moved the building to the shore of Jenny Lake. It remained at the lakeshore until it was moved to this location in the early 1990s. To the left of the walkway leading up to the entrance, text at the left of a second three-foot tall by four-foot wide inclined panel reads: Historic Jenny Lake Each historic building at Jenny Lake has been touched by many hands. Homesteaders and young men of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) stacked their logs. Over the years, park service workers rebuilt, moved, and cared for each cabin. Within their walls, rangers have organized rescues and helped visitors plan their day. Signs near each building provide more information. In the center, eight numbered black-and-white photographs line the bottom of the panel. A map above shows their location by number. They are: 1) CCC Camp NP 4; 2) Reimer Cabin; 3) Jenny Lake Boat House; 4) Park Entrance Station; 5) Crandall Studio; 6) Jenny Lake Ranger Station; 7) CCC Comfort Station; and 8) Jenny Lake Campground Comfort Station. A final black-and-white photograph at the far right of the panel shows a boxy, vintage car parked in front of another log cabin. Text on a blue panel section to the left of the photograph reads: Old Logs Have New Lives Several historic structures at Jenny Lake are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These buildings were built in the 1920s and 1930s, as Jackson Hole grew, and Grand Teton became a national park. Today, the buildings have new life and continue to be an important part of Grand Teton’s story. Moving up the walkway to the studio, an eight-foot deep by 20-foot wide wood plank deck spans the front of the building. A single, wooden door leads from the porch over the threshold and into the studio . Crossing the threshold into the studio, there’s a wooden bench immediately to the left under a small bank of windows. An elk skull hangs high on the front wall immediately above you. The information desk is located about 20 feet off to the left from the front door on a slight angle, along the left-hand wall of the studio. There is a lowered, wheelchair-accessible section of the desk six feet along the front of the desk to the right. A video monitor mounted on the wall above and behind the desk shows a rotating display of park messages. About eight feet above the lowered section of the desk, a double log-beam rafter spans the width of the studio. Additional, smaller logs fill the triangular opening from the rafter to the roof, set at opposing 45-degree angles emanating out from the center line, like a stack of log letter Vees. A stuffed moose head adorns the center position of this high log wall, opposite the elk skull. This V-shaped design is also employed in the construction of the roof, with smaller, shorter logs stacked one beside another between the log joists in alternating diagonals. Several exhibits line the walls of the studio around its 20-foot wide by 35-foot long periphery, and there is a standalone exhibit in the center of the room, about eight feet ahead. At the far end of the room, a large, stone fireplace stands in the center of the room next to an open doorway at the right that leads into a smaller, adjoining room that houses the Grand Teton Association Store. From a position just inside the front door, move about eight feet forward to face the first panel of the exhibit, a four-foot wide by eight-foot tall floor-standing display.
