- Gugliemo Marconi (1874-1937) established a wireless transmitting station here in 1901 to act as a link between Poldhu in Cornwall and Clifden in Co. Galway. An Italian by birth but with a Jameson mother from Enniscorthy and an O'Brien wife from Clare
