Despite fugitive slave laws, Chesterfield (now Chesterhill) became a refuge for runaway slaves. An Underground Railroad route crossed Morgan County, where Elias Bundy and fellow Quakers hid fugitives en route to Canada. The Monthly Meeting began in 1839.
