The park is divided into two sections (on either side of State Route 44, which cuts through at the park's narrowest point): The North Unit, the most popular area with most of the easily-accessible attractions. The South Unit (also known as the Stronghold District), a largely-roadless backcountry on the Pine Ridge Reservation co-managed with the Oglala Sioux Tribe.
