Hay Butte Overlook sits at 3,094 feet along the Badlands Loop Scenic Byway, facing 270 degrees toward the Sage Creek Wilderness Area. The land drops 207 feet within 600 meters of the viewpoint, opening a view of Hay Butte, a grass-capped butte of Badlands formation and one of the major landmarks in the wilderness area. Bison and Bighorn Sheep frequent this area and are known to stay near roads, vehicles, and people. Roberts Prairie Dog Town lies to the northwest at 3.3 miles, with the Sage Creek Basin Overlook viewpoint further west-northwest at 4.2 miles. White Butte is visible at 6.3 miles, and Quinn Table, Seventyone Table, and Heck Table extend the view west and southwest out to 16 miles. Because the overlook faces directly toward the sunset direction, the setting sun aligns with this view; sunset times range from 16:15 at the December solstice to 20:36 at the June solstice. Wall is the nearest town, 8.1 miles north, with Philip and Kadoka farther east. The next stop along the byway is Pinnacles Overlook.
