Battery point

Battery Point sits at 20 feet along Alaska's Marine Highway, with the land dropping 75 feet within 600 meters of the overlook. Mount Villard rises to the north-northeast, 4.9 miles away at 4,885 feet, while Sinclair Mountain is visible to the southeast at a distance of 11.4 miles, reaching 6,194 feet. Sinclair Mountain, part of the Boundary Ranges of the Coast Mountains within Tongass National Forest, was named in 1920 for Cephas Hempstone Sinclair, a hydrographic and geodetic engineer with 47 years of federal service; the peak saw its first recorded ascent in mid-June 1973 by Jerry Buckley, Joe Greenough, and Craig Lingle. Skagway lies 17.2 miles to the north, with Klukwan situated 22.9 miles to the northwest and Mosquito Lake further out at 32.9 miles west-northwest. Daylight at this stop varies considerably by season: the June solstice brings sunrise at 03:47 and sunset at 22:21, while the December solstice narrows the window to sunrise at 08:57 and sunset at 15:04. The equinoxes fall closer to twelve-hour days, with March and September sunrise and sunset times both near 07:00 and 19:00. This overlook follows Whale Observatory and precedes Kelgaya Point on the route.
