Farther out, Maintop Mountain, Spy Rock, The Priest, and Three Ridges appear between 5.9 and 6.6 miles, with Elk Pond Mountain and Nettle Mountain visible past the 8-mile mark. Maintop Mountain, one of the more distant peaks in view, lies in Nelson County within the George Washington National Forest, situated on a spur off the main Blue Ridge Mountains between Elk Pond Mountain and The Priest.

The overlook lies between Bald Mountain Overlook and Yankee Horse Ridge Overlook along the Parkway, with Charlottesville about 34.2 miles east-northeast, Lynchburg 34.5 miles south, and Harrisonburg 39.0 miles north-northeast. The access road to the overlook closes seasonally from April 1 to January 10. Daylight hours vary by season, from a 05:55 sunrise and 20:43 sunset at the June solstice to a 07:29 sunrise and 17:01 sunset at the December solstice.
