Galisteo Basin Overlook

Galisteo Basin Overlook sits at 7,290 feet along Historic Route 66, facing 240 degrees toward the southwest. The terrain drops 319 feet within 600 meters of the overlook, giving an open view across the basin below. Pueblo Cañon Park lies to the west-northwest at 2.9 miles, while a cluster of viewpoints — Sphinx Overlook, Cerro Colorado, and Happy Valley Overlook — sit to the southwest and south-southwest at roughly 4.3 miles. Farther out, Heaven's Gate Overlook, Andorra Valley Overlook, and the Galisteo Basin Preserve extend the sightline to 6.5 miles, with the Santa Fe Conservation Trust and The Rider's Rest Overlook visible beyond that, out to 8 miles. The facing direction is angled 30 degrees off square to the sunset, so the overlook faces generally toward the evening sun rather than directly into it. Sunset times range from about 16:55 in December to 20:23 in June. Santa Fe is 11.4 miles to the north-northwest, with Los Alamos 34.1 miles northwest and Las Vegas 36.5 miles east. The route continues from Pondorosa Point to this overlook and on to Lightning Scarred Tree.
