Grandfather Mountain Overlook

Grandfather Mountain Overlook sits at 4,143 feet along the Blue Ridge Parkway, facing due north, with the land dropping 362 feet within 600 meters of the pull-off. The view north and north-northeast takes in a series of named features and peaks: Woods Walk at 1.3 miles, Linville Bluffs at 1.6 miles, Forrest Gump Picnic Area and Cliffside Picnic Area both around 1.7 miles, and Scheer Bluffs and Linville Peak near 1.9 miles, the latter rising to 5,262 feet. Farther along the same line of sight, the Patio View of MacRae Peak appears at 2.2 miles and 5,377 feet elevation. To the northeast, Grandmother View is visible at 2.3 miles and the Linn Cove Viaduct at 2.4 miles. Johnson City lies 33.2 miles to the west-northwest, Hickory 36.2 miles southeast, and Bristol 41.1 miles north-northwest. The overlook is preceded by Little Bald Overlook and followed by the Patio View of MacRae Peak along the route. Sunrise and sunset times vary by season, ranging from a 06:12 sunrise at the June solstice to a 17:17 sunset at the December solstice.
