Because the overlook faces toward sunset, evening light crosses the ridge line directly; sunset falls at 19:39 near the March equinox, 20:48 at the June solstice, 19:26 near the September equinox, and 17:17 at the December solstice. Johnson City lies 33.2 miles west-northwest, Hickory 36.1 miles southeast, and Bristol 41.6 miles north-northwest. Lost Cove Cliffs Overlook precedes this stop on the parkway, and Grandfather Mountain Overlook follows it.
