Hooper Point Overlook

Hooper Point Overlook sits at 5,413 feet on the Cherohala Skyway, facing 150 degrees toward the south-southeast. The land falls 777 feet within 600 meters of the edge, giving an open view across a series of peaks to the south. Bee Knobs rises southeast at 2.1 miles (4,732 ft), with Pantherflat Top southwest-southwest at 2.9 miles (4,692 ft) and Round Mountain at 4.3 miles (4,108 ft) in the same direction. McDaniel Bald sits due south at 4.5 miles (4,642 ft), while Freeman Knob and Hangover Top lie south-southwest at 4.7 and 4.8 miles (4,644 ft and 4,548 ft). Buzzard Roost is the most distant named peak, at 6.3 miles south-southeast (4,086 ft). Maryville is 31.1 miles north, Alcoa 33.0 miles north, and Athens 35.0 miles west-northwest. The overlook lies between Shute Cove Overlook and Santeetlah Overlook on the byway. Given the southward orientation, the site sees sunrise well after the peaks are lit at both equinoxes (around 7:25–7:41 a.m.) and later still near the December solstice (7:42 a.m.), with sunset ranging from 17:28 in December to 20:55 at the June solstice.
