Bunches Bald Overlook is visible to the north-northwest at 0.5 mi (5,071 ft), while three peaks extend into the distance: Barnett Knob to the west-northwest at 2.8 mi (4,654 ft), Rattlesnake Mountain to the west-southwest at 5.6 mi (3,775 ft), and Carter Top to the southwest at 5.7 mi (4,295 ft). The overlook faces directly toward the sunset. On the June solstice, sunset occurs at 20:52, while on the December solstice it falls at 17:24, giving the widest seasonal range of light at this stop. Equinox sunsets fall near 19:45 (March) and 19:31 (September). Waynesville lies 11.3 miles east, Asheville 36.3 miles east, and Sevierville 32.5 miles northwest.
