Monitor and Merrimac Viewpoint

This overlook sits at 4,888 feet on the Dead Horse Point Mesa Scenic Byway, mile 13 of 28, with the terrain dropping 243 feet within 600 meters of the viewpoint. The overlook faces due east, directly toward the sunrise. Monitor Butte rises to the north-northeast at 0.9 miles and 5,477 feet, while Heat Wave Butte stands east at 2.8 miles and 5,316 feet. Box Canyon Overlook lies east at 2.9 miles and 5,324 feet, and farther east-southeast are Mirror Gulch at 3.8 miles and 5,540 feet and Misty's Thumb at 3.9 miles and 5,666 feet. A second viewpoint, also called Monitor and Merrimac Viewpoint, sits east-southeast at 0.5 miles and 5,045 feet. Moab is 11.9 miles to the east-southeast, Castle Valley is 18.1 miles east, and Green River lies 32.8 miles to the northwest. Because the view faces sunrise, morning visits will show the light striking the terrain directly; on the June solstice the sun rises at 05:55 and sets at 20:48, while on the December solstice sunrise is at 07:34 and sunset at 17:02.
