Pilot-Index overlook

This overlook on the Beartooth Highway sits at 8,737 feet, facing 240 degrees, with land dropping 509 feet within 600 meters of the pullout. The view opens across a spread of peaks: Hunter Peak to the south-southwest at 4.8 miles (9,005 ft), Kuchunteka'a Toyavi to the west-southwest at 8.0 miles (9,971 ft), Jim Smith Peak to the west at 8.8 miles (10,227 ft), and Hurricane Mesa to the southwest at 10.0 miles (10,519 ft). Farther out, Pilot Peak and Index Peak appear to the west-northwest at 12.3 and 12.5 miles, reaching 11,481 and 11,194 feet respectively, with Indian Peak to the southwest at 15.0 miles (10,911 ft).

The facing direction is angled 30 degrees off due west, putting it toward the sunset side of the sky. Sunset falls at 21:09 in June, 19:31 at the March equinox, 19:18 in September, and 16:41 at the December solstice. Red Lodge lies 25.9 miles to the northeast, Cody is 40.1 miles southeast, and Bridger is 43.4 miles northeast. The previous lookout along this route is Falls.
