The most beautiful byway in America. P.S.: This is the first rating submitted in the app.

Here came the second realization that we need to build this website and app.

Tips & best time to go1

  • Run it early — beat the afternoon storms

Best in summerOpens Friday before Memorial Day (late May), closes ~Oct 15 — both weather-dependent. Temporary closures possible any month from snow/wind. Fully closed all winter.

68 miles of switchbacks from Red Lodge to Cooke City, topping out at Beartooth Pass — 10,947 ft, well above treeline. Charles Kuralt's "most beautiful drive in America" and he wasn't exaggerating. Drive it July through mid-September for the cleanest weather; snowbanks still wall the road in June and storms can shut the gates any month up here. Stop at Vista Point on the Montana side for the Rock Creek canyon view, and hit every pullout past the pass — alpine lakes the whole way down. Go in the morning: afternoon thunderstorms build fast at elevation. Pack warm layers even in July, keep bear spray in the car (this is grizzly country), and rely on 511mt.net or WYDOT for live status, not Google/Apple Maps. If it's gated, Chief Joseph Scenic Byway (WY-296) is the workaround to the Yellowstone NE entrance.
