Piprap Overlook

Piprap Overlook sits at 2,917 feet along Skyline Drive, with the land dropping 578 feet within 600 meters of the site. The view faces 300°, roughly northwest, offering a sightline toward sunset over the terrain below. Davis Mountain rises to the west at 1.7 miles, with Crimora Park, Apple Cannon, and Endless View Farms visible further west near the 5-mile mark, each sitting between roughly 1,240 and 1,250 feet in elevation. Rough Hill and Kiser Hill lie farther west and west-southwest at 7.7 and 8.3 miles, and Town Park appears to the north-northwest at 9.0 miles. Staunton is 16.3 miles to the west, Charlottesville 18.5 miles east-southeast, and Harrisonburg 20.6 miles north-northwest. Because the overlook faces toward the sunset, evening light crosses the scene directly; sunset falls at 20:42 during the June solstice and at 16:59 in December, with the equinox sunsets falling near 19:14–19:27. Chimney Rock precedes this stop along the byway, and Crimora Lake Overlook follows.
