Looking west from Crimora Lake Overlook. Terrain and imagery at true elevation.

Crimora Lake Overlook sits at 2,969 feet on Skyline Drive, facing 290 degrees toward the sunset, with the land dropping 694 feet within 600 meters of the pullout. Davis Mountain rises to the northwest at 1.9 miles, and farther out to the west and west-northwest lie Crimora Park, Apple Cannon, and Endless View Farms, all under 1,300 feet in elevation. More distant features stretch west and southwest, including Rough Hill, Kiser Hill, Ridgeview Park, Coiner Spring, and Hickory Hill, with Town Park visible to the north-northwest at 9.9 miles. Because the view faces close to due west, sunsets are the main light event here, ranging from 20:42 in June to 16:59 in December. Staunton lies 16.1 miles to the west, Charlottesville 18.2 miles east-southeast, and Harrisonburg 21.5 miles north-northwest. The overlook is preceded by Piprap Overlook and followed by Sawmill Ridge Overlook along the drive. Between two ridges ahead is the site of a former manganese mine, worked from 1867 until it closed in 1946; small man-made lakes built to process the ore remain in the valley below.

Crimora Lake Overlook · National Park Service

Facing northwest from an elevation of 2,985 ft (909 m), Crimora Lake Overlook is a good place to contemplate the industrial history of the Shenandoah Valley. Nestled between two ridges straight ahead is the location of a former manganese mine. Mining operations began in 1867 and at one point this area was home to one of the largest manganese deposits in the United States. The mine shut down in 1946, and all that is left are the small man-made lakes once constructed to process ore.
