Sherman Overlook #96.A

Sherman Overlook sits at 5,252 feet along the byway between Tonasket and Newport, facing roughly north (30°), with terrain dropping 654 feet within 600 meters of the site. The overlook offers a day-use area with picnic tables, outhouses, and parking for both RVs and multiple vehicles, along with a paved interpretive trail that takes about ten minutes to walk. The trail addresses how fire has shaped the surrounding landscape, and the forest here is predominantly western larch, which turns gold in late fall. Peaks visible from the site include Albian Hill to the north at 3.3 miles, Wapaloosie Mountain to the north at 4.1 miles, Graves Mountain to the east-northeast at 5.2 miles, King Mountain to the north-northeast at 5.6 miles, Mack Mountain to the northeast at 6.5 miles, and Coyote Mountain to the east-northeast at 7.9 miles. Kettle Falls lies 18.5 miles east, Colville 25.7 miles east, and Chewelah 41.0 miles east-southeast. Sherman Overlook Campground is adjacent to the site and connects to the Kettle Crest National Recreation Trail system for those planning a longer stop.
