The Overlook

The Overlook sits at 2,117 feet along Lookout Mountain Parkway, facing 300 degrees with the land dropping 675 feet within 600 meters of the edge. The terrain falls away toward Obar Spring to the north-northwest and a series of ridgelines to the west, including Street Point, Tatum Mountain, and Windy Mountain, all between 5 and 6 miles out. Raccoon Mountain rises to the north at 5.7 miles, with Hicks Mountain further northwest at 6.7 miles reaching 1,807 feet. Two other viewpoints, Laurel Point Picnic Area and Racoon Mountain Overlook, are visible to the north-northwest at roughly 6 and 7.7 miles. Range Point lies to the west-southwest at 7.9 miles.

The orientation faces toward sunset, offset by 30 degrees from due west. In December, sunset occurs at 17:34, while in June it occurs later at 20:59, giving the overlook extended evening light through the summer months. Chattanooga is 6.6 miles to the north-northeast, with Dalton and Cleveland both farther out to the east. The next stop along the route is Sunset Rock.
